3D Printing Brings New Approach to Classic Craftsmanship — Mazama Homewares

Mazama Wares is a collection of handcrafted homewares designed in Portland, Oregon USA. They are dedicated to creating quality glass and ceramic dishware. Mazama is part of the Tanner Goods family, a collection of brands focused on value-driven design and quality manufacturing.

Mazama was developing a new line of dishware and wanted to be able to test different shapes and fine-tune their designs. Due to their focus on combining functionality with beautiful design, the details were extremely important. Other, more traditional manufacturing methods like hand-throwing would have been inconsistent, time-consuming, and costly for iterative design.

Mazama began by using Hydra’s print service to prototype their ceramic silhouettes and confirm design changes quickly. 3D printing allowed them to test and tweak the important details, such as the feel of their mug handles or how the plates and bowls stack. With the guidance of Hydra Research, they were able to make their development process quicker and cheaper by optimizing print speed and quality. Once the designs were finished, Hydra produced the final forms which were used to produce the molds for final production.

Mazama used the 3D printed forms to start molding their new line of mugs, plates, and bowls. When the first set came back, they realized that more changes needed to be made on a tight deadline. Luckily Hydra was able to get a new form printed and ready to go in just a couple of days!

Mazama Wares has been using Hydra Research 3D printing and consulting services for about 6 months now and found it to be an amazing addition to their workflow. They have been gearing up to offer handcrafted dinnerware and larger variety of mug sizes. They are excited to launch an entirely new line of ceramics this Fall and the following Spring!
